9-5-MAN-LINK-REBUILD

If you have a rare Saab 9-5 of 1999 to 2004.5  vintage the ball couplings in the gear shift "parallelogram" linkage behind the engine are made of plastic.....yes PLASTIC.  If you have any decent mileage on this linkage these ball joints are loose loose.  There is no lubrication and they are a steel ball end with a plastic receptacle.

I addition the 2 lower rotating shafts are steel with a plastic housing.  This housing has no lubrication and tends to get a bit sloppy over time.

All of this play in these joints add up and the result is sloppiness in the coupling.

Also I have seen the platic ball joints pop off while driving......nice.....you are stuck in that gear.  It is also possible for the plastic ball joint to separate from the steel shaft.

NOTE WHAT THIS FITS.

This part will fit Saab 9-5s using part number 5164108 for cars that have VIN of xxxxxxxx43501882 or lower.  If you have a VIN OF XXXXXXXX43501883 and higher, you need to replace the mechanism with part # 55562606  which is currently [july 2020] from eSaabparts.com for $116.01 USD.  This part has steel ball joints.....not a precise as ours but improved over the original design.

WHY WE CAME UP WITH THIS MOD.

I have always loved the Saab 9-5 stick shift 5 speed manual.  Our first 9-5 was a 1999 dark green wagon.  The Aero was not available in 1999 and was launched in 2000.  Of course we ordered it from the dealer with a stick shift.  Of the 7 Saab 900s, 1 9000, 3 9-5 Aeros I have owned, they has all been sticks.  We traded the 1999 in for a 2001 Aero 5 speed stick.  When this car got up to 200,000 miles I started to get a bit annoyed with the amount of free play in the stick.  I upgraded the shifter to a genuinesaab.com short shifter and that made a great improvement.  At the same time I removed the reverse gear lockout and that removed a big annoyance.  Now you did not have to put the car in reverse to remove the key.  We highly recommend this genuinesaab.com short shift kit developed by Nick Taliaferro.  It is a quality item and it works.

After adding the quick shift kit, I started looking at the stock parallelogram shifting mechanism under the hood behind the engine and realized there was a lot of play in it due to it having lots of plastic parts.  The ball joints are actually plastic and they wear and get very sloppy.

I worked hard figuring out how to remove all the play I could from parallelogram mechanism.  I have been successful in this endeavor.  My Aero has 60,000+ miles on the prototype and we have many of our rebuilt mechanisms in service in the field.  I also have the same setup on my Imola red 2000 Aero wagon with another 70,000 miles of testing.

You send us you core and we will rebuild the mechanism.  I have tried to buy up cores, but most used sources want and arm and a leg for them.  I still work at hunting them down and sometimes I am able to have 1 or 2 rebuilt units in stock so we can ship as soon as we get your core.

WHAT WE DO

We completely rebuild your linkage.  The plastic ball joints are replaced by precision tight tolerance sealed STEEL ball joints.  New shafts, with adjusters are fitted.  We also fit grease fittings on the 2 rotating lower shafts as well as nylon tipped inserts that remove the end play in these shafts.  We also weld a new fitting to the arm to accept the upper linkage that has 2 more precision ball joints and new shaft.  Study the photos and you will see the details of this modifications.

  • Zero tolerance high precision stainless steel ball couplings, lubricated and sealed
  • New adjustable shafts
  • New upper anchor welded in place
  • Grease fittings to lubricate 2 lower shafts
  • Nylon tipped inserts remove lower shaft play
  • No slop in shifting

This rework takes the slop out of this parallelogram mechanism.  This mechanism was originally well engineered, but the choice of plastic ball joint housings by SAAB is highly questionable, and just does not work as the mileage piles up.  Saab did upgrade it, but it is just OK in  our opinion and you pay $503.66 UDS [as of 7/10/202 from eSaabparts.com] for the part.  We are confident that our rebuild will result in a huge improvement in the shifting precision of your Saab 9-5 manual transmission.

We also recommend combining this linkage upgrade with the genuinsesaab.com  [Taliafaro Imports] short shifter kit for the ultimate in precise shifting.

NOTE:  This rebuild is for 1998 to 2004.5 [see note above] 9-5 manual transmissions.  Later cars have a different mechanism.
